Inga Dam: renewal of the installations

Democratic Republic of the Congo

The installations at the Inga were in need of renewal. Since they went into service in 1972 and 1982, the auscultation systems for the Inga 1 and Inga 2 hydroelectric installations had not been fundamentally modified and were no longer state-of- the-art in terms of the auscultation of structures of this size and importance.
The teams from Fondasol's International Studies department were therefore involved in the geotechnical investigations for their upgrading.

The project

The waters of the River Congo are deviated by the Inga hydroelectric dams via an old arm of the river Congo, a system that consists of the following structures:

  • Inga 1 dam (Shongo)
  • Inga 1 hydroelectric power plant
  • Inga 2 dam and its 3 secondary dams
  • Inga 2 hydroelectric power plant

The objective of the project was, firstly, to core drill a series of reconnaissance boreholes in the foundations, to re-establish and extend the installations' auscultation system taking account of technological progress in the field, the changes in the behaviour of the structures and the presence of reconnaissance boreholes to install instruments.

Campaign of investigations

The boreholes were drilled on the Inga 1 and 2 dams on the crests and inside the drainage galleries of the dams.

Each installation required craning operations. The boreholes in the drainage galleries required the use of a drilling rig with a separate power pack, in due to the limited space in the work area.

Details of the mission

  • Over 1000 ml of core drilling including 38 core-drilled boreholes with depths of 10 to 50 m
  • Oriented analysis of the stratification by  borehole camera, dilatometer tests (96 mm dilatometer) and Lugeon-type water tests for all the boreholes drilled
  • Ø 116 mm boreholes with inclinometer-extensometers (fixing of a inclinometer tube with magnetic rings)
  • Ø 101 mm boreholes with piezometers with interstitial pressure sensors
  • Taking of intact samples in sheaths
  • Laboratory tests including 40 simple compressive strength tests and 30 direct shear tests on pre-existing discontinuities
  •  dont 40 essais de compression simple et 30 essais de cisaillement direct sur discontinuités préexistantes
